Two seasons with Pontardawe Town

Football in Pontardawe goes back to the 1890s, when a town side won one of the earliest Swansea League championships. The club as it stands today was formed in 1947, and it has spent the decades since collecting silverware. Welsh League divisional titles in the nineties and again in 2004/05, a West Wales Senior Cup, and a Division One campaign in 2001/02 that missed the league title by a single point.

Since 2015 home has been Parc Ynysderw, a tidy ground by the river with hills on three sides, ten minutes' walk from the town centre. It suits them. Pontardawe is a town of about seven thousand people in the Swansea Valley, and on a Saturday a healthy chunk of it is at the football.

The 2025/26 season was some ride. Pontardawe finished runners up in the Ardal South West, then won the promotion play off final 2-0 against Cwmbran Town to climb back into the Cymru South, the second tier of Welsh football. The same season they went all the way to the final of the FAW Amateur Trophy, a national final, before falling to Bangor City 1876 in Aberystwyth.

Just as impressive is what happens below the first team. The club runs more than twenty junior sides, from minis through to youth and girls' teams, with a junior section the club rates among the best in the country. That is hundreds of Swansea Valley kids playing football every week under one badge.
