Backing Ely Rangers

Some clubs are founded in committee rooms. Ely Rangers were founded, as the story goes, after a chance meeting between groups of Ely lads on a Butlins holiday in the mid sixties. They came home, pulled a team together, and in 1965 Ely Rangers AFC was born.

The club grew up in the Cardiff Combination League and grew up winning. Five senior championships through the seventies alongside a cabinet full of cup wins made Rangers one of the names in Cardiff amateur football. In 1983 they moved to Station Road in Wenvoe, and more than forty years later that is still home. Even the badge has a story. The eagle on the crest was mistaken for a griffin so often that the nickname stuck, and they have been The Griffins ever since.

Today Ely Rangers play in the South Wales Premier League's top division, and this season they are one of the sides everyone fancies to be in the mix at the right end of the table.

Our sponsorship at Station Road is a player sponsorship of Alex Long, a forward who has made a habit of finding the net in the South Wales Premier League.

Player sponsorship is one of the oldest traditions in grassroots football. A local business puts its name next to a player for the season, and the money helps the club cover the unglamorous stuff that never pays for itself. Kit, travel, pitch fees, the lot. We're proud to have our name next to Alex's for the season ahead, and we'll be keeping an eye on the goal tally.
